Paul Gascoigne to face charge of racially aggravated abuse

Former England star Paul Gascoigne has been summoned to court to be formally charged with racially aggravated abuse.

The 49-year-old will appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court on June 17, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.

The case relates to an alleged remark during an "Evening With Gazza" show at Wolverhampton Civic Hall last November, Midlands newspaper the Express & Star reported.

The CPS had initially decided not to prosecute the former Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers and Everton player, the paper said.

Gascoigne's agent Terry Baker made no comment when contacted by the newspaper.

The former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder retired from the sport in 2004 and has discussed his struggles with mental health and battles with alcoholism.
