Garbine Muguruza upsets Serena Williams, wins 2016 French Open women's title

Gabiñe Muguruza has scored a massive upset over Serena Williams in the final of the 2016 French Open, claiming her first ever Grand Slam title along the way. In just her second Grand Slam final appearance ever, Muguruza scored multiple breaks on Williams and despite issues with double faults and her second serve in general, did enough to push Williams to the edge and ultimately claim the straight-set victory, 7-5, 6-4.

Muguruza, 22, was a serious underdog to Williams, who has won three French Open titles in the past. Williams was going for her 22nd Grand Slam title ever, which would have tied her with Steffi Graf for the most ever by a woman in the Open era. And while it seems like a foregone conclusion that Williams will eventually get 22 and potentially quite a few more than that, it was Muguruza's task to delay that for at least a couple months.

Muguruza never been past the fourth round at the Australian Open or even the second round of the US Open, but she now has a Grand Slam title to her name. She took advantage of a weak first serve from Williams and was particularly good in long rallies, outlasting Williams on multiple occasions.

Serena's backhand was one of her biggest issues in the opening set. Several shots sailed long on her, but Muguruza's issues with double faults generally evened things out.

Muguruza did a good job of defending an early break point in the first set. Williams pushed hard and had the 40-30 lead with Muguruza serving at 1-2, but the younger player kept her cool and fought off a pair of break points before ultimately winning a game that lasted more than eight minutes.

That's when Muguruza made her first move, and took a love-40 lead over Williams in the next game. Williams started to battle back, but she double faulted, giving Muguruza the first break of the match. Muguruza then held again despite a pair of double faults in her following service game, but after a Williams hold, Muguruza unfortunately gave up the break on her following serve and the set was back on serve at 4-4.

But a couple games later, Muguruza had Williams on the ropes again. She fought Williams' serve hard, and this was one of the turning points of the game.

Muguruza wound up breaking her to go up 6-5 with a shot to serve for the set. Muguruza had some serious issues with her second serve and had to fight off a pair of break points, but dominant first serves got the game to deuce several times and ultimately gave her the hold and the opening set.

When the next set got underway, Williams' play looked a little bit shaky. Muguruza very quickly took control of Williams' opening service game and broke the world No. 1 after allowing just one ball to get past her in the game. Unfortunately for her, Williams immediately broke her back to get the set on serve but it was very quickly turned back around again when Muguruza broke back for the third consecutive game.

But with Williams serving and Muguruza up 5-3 in the second set, Muguruza had a couple championship point attempts while leading at 15-40. Williams fought off the first one, and then the second one to make it deuce. They returned to deuce several times before Muguruza sailed one wide and Williams held to force Muguruza to win it with her serve, if at all.

Muguruza served exceptionally well, going up 40-love with multiple championship points and she managed to bury it home with a lob to the baseline for the win.
